A female needs a minimum weight of 200 g to be fertile after her first winter; in 2013, some females emerged at only about 186 g on average, below that threshold. Maize acreage has grown 57% since 1989 — a low-protein, late-harvested monoculture that leaves the hamster less time and fewer resources to fatten up before winter.
