A female needs a minimum weight of 200 g to be fertile after her first winter; in 2013, some females emerged at only about 186 g on average, below that threshold. Maize acreage has grown 57% since 1989 — a low-protein, late-harvested monoculture that leaves the hamster less time and fewer resources to fatten up before winter.
The European hamster's range has shrunk by 94% in France since 1972 and by more than 75% in Ukraine and Russia — a decline judged rapid enough by the IUCN to justify a critically endangered listing and a warning of possible extinction within thirty years without action.

Reintroduction programs are already underway, such as the release of 11 captive-bred hamsters in Ukraine's Khotyn National Park — a scale still tiny compared with the extent of the decline documented across the continent.
The European hamster is considered an ecosystem engineer through its deep burrows, but no study has measured what this digging activity contributes to farmland soil, or what would be lost with its disappearance — most available research covers the causes of its decline, not its ecological role.
