The eastern indigo snake, a federally threatened species, uses gopher tortoise burrows as overwintering refugia in the northern part of its range. The gopher frog depends heavily on burrows for shelter and food, particularly right after metamorphosis, when young frogs are most vulnerable. The FWC designates the gopher tortoise as a keystone species because it physically reshapes its environment in ways that support hundreds of other organisms.
Where gopher tortoise burrows are denser, vertebrate community diversity and evenness increase — but, contrary to a common assumption, the total number of species present does not.

By relating burrow density to vertebrate community structure in a Florida longleaf pine savanna, the authors isolate a robust effect on diversity and evenness — the more equal distribution of individuals across species — regardless of fire regime, without that effect translating into more distinct species present at the site. An example where the keystone effect is real but more subtle than a simple species-count gain.
Reclassified in 2026 from 'vulnerable' to 'critically endangered': none of the monitored populations are growing, and a further 69 to 91% decline is projected over the next two generations.

The new assessment documents a roughly 80% decline over the past 120 years (three tortoise generations), driven mainly by the loss, fragmentation, and degradation of its longleaf pine savanna habitat — the very ecosystem where its keystone effect on vertebrate diversity was measured.
If the tortoise's projected decline is confirmed, the hundreds of species that use its burrows would lose an increasing share of their available shelter — but no study has yet tracked, in the field, how the community of these commensal species would actually respond to such a loss.
