Introducing giraffe to a reserve where it had been absent measurably changed acacia population structure: several acacia species suffered high mortality from high-canopy browsing, to the point that Acacia davyi was locally extirpated — the giraffe is the only browser able to reach and kill mature trees beyond the reach of other herbivores.

Study conducted at Ithala Game Reserve (South Africa). It compares acacia demography in areas browsed by giraffe versus giraffe-free areas within the same reserve, isolating its specific effect from that of other large herbivores. Acacia species differ markedly in their ability to "escape" giraffe by growing quickly upward and out of reach, which explains why some decline sharply while others hold on.

The mechanism is proven at the scale of a reserve where giraffe were introduced, but no one has measured whether the 80-98% collapse of the Kordofan and Nubian giraffe populations has already changed acacia structure across their actual range — the exact mirror image of the Ithala experiment, at a far larger scale and without a comparable monitoring setup.

Northern giraffe populations have collapsed in areas of armed conflict and difficult access (Sudan, Chad, Central African Republic), which makes woody-vegetation monitoring comparable to Ithala's practically impossible to set up today.
