The world's largest freshwater fish, the beluga sits atop the Caspian Sea food chain as an adult, preying on other fish — including other sturgeon species — with no known natural predator besides humans.

Diet shifts sharply with age: juveniles under 40 cm feed mainly on small pelagic fish (Clupeonella), intermediate-sized individuals on gobies, and the largest adults on mullet, shad, and other sturgeons. Its late maturity — around age 18 — and exceptional longevity, up to 118 years, make it a species especially slow to rebuild after overexploitation.

Beluga stocks fell by 90% over twenty years, to the lowest levels ever recorded — driven by caviar demand that reaches more than $100 an ounce, even as export quotas stayed nearly unchanged in the face of this documented collapse.

The authors, in an article intended for fisheries-management education, document how the extreme economic value of beluga caviar — the most expensive of the sturgeon species — sustained intense fishing pressure well after the species' decline was scientifically established, a textbook case of the gap between scientific evidence and management decisions.

In Romania

15 beluga sturgeons weighing about 4 kg each and more than 1,500 young Russian sturgeons were released into the Danube near Fetesti — a concrete step in the face of both species' now-shared 'critically endangered' status, but tiny compared with the scale of the historic decline.

The release mobilized Romanian environmental and fisheries authorities, fishing communities, and international conservation experts, funded by the EU's LIFE programme and the La Prairie Group — an example of the multi-stakeholder collaboration typical of reintroduction programmes for very late-maturing species, where results won't be measurable for decades. No long-term monitoring can yet say whether these released individuals will survive to sexual maturity eighteen years later, nor whether they will manage to reproduce in a Danube still fragmented by dams.
