The panda has a small home range (a few square kilometers) that reserves cover well, whereas the four large carnivores roam territories exceeding 38 square miles that extend well beyond reserve boundaries, where they remain exposed to poaching, logging, and disease. The study concludes that protecting the panda is not sufficient to protect the large carnivores of the same landscape.
The same reserve network shows the other side of the ledger: the tufted deer, Chinese serow, Chinese goral, and leopard cat all saw measurably improved habitat inside reserves compared to comparable areas outside them — the panda's umbrella effect is real, but selective by species.

The study compares 12 species using China's third and fourth national panda surveys and a statistical matching method. The red panda (Ailurus styani), despite sharing the same bamboo habitat, is a notable exception: its habitat slightly worsened even within the reserves.
The panda is often described in popular science as a seed disperser that maintains the plant diversity of its habitat, but no quantified study has measured how many seeds of species other than bamboo actually survive its gut passage and germinate — unlike other large frugivorous herbivores that are better studied on this point.

The panda is an almost exclusively bamboo-eating herbivore: bamboo produces viable seed only during extremely rare, synchronized flowering events, sometimes decades apart, which makes dispersal of its own seeds by the panda marginal. The claimed disperser role therefore mostly concerns occasionally eaten plants, without any published measurement of its real extent.
