A synthetic alternative, recombinant Factor C (rFC), has been commercially available since 2003 and has proven at least equivalent to the traditional test — arguably superior, since it avoids false positives caused by glucans present in the horseshoe-crab-blood test. Its adoption nonetheless remains limited across the pharmaceutical industry, despite the potential to replace up to 90% of current demand without requiring new regulatory approval.
The harvest of horseshoe crabs for fishing bait increased 10-fold during the 1990s, causing a more than 90% drop in egg availability on spawning beaches — the red knot population that depends on those eggs to complete its migration declined by more than 75% over the same period.
