The study draws on 146 field-tracked foraging trips (921 hours total) between 2001 and 2013 across twelve camps. Nests found with the bird's help are also significantly richer than those found without it — the honeyguide doesn't just increase how often nests are found, it also steers hunters toward better resources.
What the Hadza community would lose if this mutualism disappeared comes down to a precise mechanism: by responding to the Yao honey-hunters' special 'brrr-hm!' call, the greater honeyguide doubles its chances of guiding them (33% to 66%) and more than triples its chances of leading them to an actual bees' nest (16% to 54%) compared with a control sound.

By field-testing the traditional Yao honey-hunters' call against control sounds of comparable volume in the Niassa National Reserve, the authors show that the bird distinguishes the specific signal from mere noise — the first demonstration of two-way communication, in which each species actively signals to the other its willingness to cooperate.
The greater honeyguide learns the specific signals of its local human partners — it cooperates almost twice as readily with the traditional call of its own region as with a 'foreign' call that works just as well elsewhere — which makes the mutualism vulnerable to the local erosion of honey-hunting practices, independent of the bird population's own health.

By comparing how honeyguides in Mozambique respond to the local Yao call versus a foreign Hadza call recorded in Tanzania, the authors show that the local learning effect is not explained by differences in how the sounds carry acoustically — the bird genuinely learns its human community's signal, generation after generation, a mutualism culturally shaped on both sides of the interaction.
What's missing to confirm it: No monitoring yet directly measures whether the decline of traditional honey-hunting practices in some regions translates into a measurable loss of local bird responsiveness, rather than remaining a plausible but untested hypothesis.
